Capri Marina Grande

Marina Grande's port area is busy as the jet ferries arrive from various locations: Sorrento, Naples and the Amalfi Coast. From here you can take various boat trips to explore Capri's coastline; some offering food and bathing stops. Of course the brand "Capri" is also synonymous with cars (Lincoln (Ford) first using the brand in the 1950's) and you will find various open top taxis created from various types of vehicle offering drives up the winding roads to Capri Town and around the island. The easiest & cheapest way to reach Capri Town from Marina Grande is using the funicular railway a 5 minute walk from where the ferries dock. You can buy tickets opposite the entrance. Tourism in Capri has a history that extends back to Roman times and in the 19th century it was known as a place of refuge/escape for northern Europeans with alternative lifestyles. Somerset Maugham's "The Lotus Eater" was also based here with its tale of a bank manager who escaped the boredom of his life in London for one of pleasure on Capri at the beginning of the 20th century, nothing's new!

However it was in the 1950's that Capri became the venue of the international jet-set and this is still reflected in the nature of the shops you will find in Capri town and the prices in Piazza Umberto. The Baroque Chiesa di Santo Stefano (1688-95) is just off the Piazza and has floors made from marble recovered from Roman villas.

Anacapri is a short bus ride (great views but choose your side if you don't like heights) along from Capri town. The bus drops you at the war memorial and a short walk away is the "centro storico". The idiosyncratic Casa Rossa  was constructed (1876-99) next to a 15th century tower by an American Colonel after the American Civil War (since he was from New Orleans presumably on the losing side?) and he started a collection of archaeological remains. This tradition was continued when the State acquired and restored it in the 1990's and is now used as a permanent exhibition (closed Monday's) of 18/19th century paintings of Capri. The Baroque Chiesa di S.Michele (1698-1719) has a wonderful majolica floor depicting Adam & Eve's expulsion from paradise (1761).

The Chiesa di Santa Sofia (1510) is at the literal centre of Anacapri in Piazza Materia and in the surrouding streets are shops and cafe's.

If you fancy a little time on the beach (or a relaxing meal by the sea) then buses run from Anacapri Capri Town & Marina Grande to Faro named after the  lighthouse (1862-7) the second brightest in Italy. There is a pleasant rugged coast and small beach area with bar/restaurant.
