Sorrento's origins date from Roman times (Surrentum) but it was Its central Piazza carries the name of its most famous son the poet Torquato Tasso (1544-95). A few hundred metres north are cliff top park areas with great views across the Bay 0f Naples and to its west the warren of streets in its old town.
