How & Why to Visit Herculaneum

To visit Herculaneum from the Amalfi Coast one of the easiest options is to use the "Circumvesuviana" train (c. 40 minutes)  from Sorrento or Sant'Agnello. Driving is not recommended due to the volume of traffic. Herculaneum itself is often neglected in favour of its more famous partner; Pompeii which is unfortunate. What Pompeii has in scale Herculaneum offers (literally) in height; having been buried, organic materials including timbers were preserved and therefore more of the buildings were preserved in their original structure. It is a more compact but perhaps more interesting and certainly easier on the feet site to explore.
