Piazza Tasso & Antonino

The literal heart of Sorrento is Piazza Tasso. During the day this is a busy intersection with regular buses to the other areas of the town. In the evening it takes on a totally different feel with traffic limited. To its north-east corner is a statue to the Piazza'a namesake ;Torquato Tasso. East stretches the main shop lined thoroughfare in the direction of Sant'Agnello and West are the narrow streets of the "centro storico" with shops, cafe's and restaurants.

A short walk south is Piazza Antonino, with the tourist office to one side and the 11th century Basilica Antonino, which has the body of Sorrento's patron saint and guardian  "Sant'Antonino" in its crypt . Legend suggests that he miraculously recovered a child who had been swallowed by a whale on Sorrento's beach and his statues depict him standing on a sea creature. His death on February 14th AD626 is celebrated annually in Sorrento (presumably more passionately than "Valentine's day?).
